2019-06-01 GOLF - The La Salle Ateneo Sportsfest
The La Salle-Ateneo Sportsfest kicked-off with the golf tournament at the Penderbrook Golf Club in Fairfax.  Everything around the course was so green, but the blue ruled the game!  Congratulations Ateneo Golf Team! The La Salle-Ateneo Sportsfest.  On the basketball front, we congratulate the Ateneo Basketball Team for bagging the championship trophy!  Our gallant La Salle players gave Ateneo a good fight and heightened the thrills when the La Salle 3-pointers rallied to close the gap.  While the championship trophy has eluded our team this time, the fire to prepare for the next tournament has been ignited!

The La Salle-Ateneo Sportsfest.  It was the hottest day so far in 2019 at almost 100 degrees, but not hot enough to match the exciting volleyball and basketball matches at the air-conditioned St. John the Beloved's Gym in McClean.  It was a glorious day for La Salle since, for the first time in the La Salle-Ateneo Washington DC sportsfest history, La Salle emerged as the new Champion in Volleyball!  HOORAY Volleyball Team!  After the review of the video footages, the team captain, the coaches, the players and spectators unanimously voted for Corky de Asis as the most valuable player!  His powerful and notably unresponded service points that brought the score to 12-0 at the deciding 3rd game clinched the La Salle victory that early!  Congratulations to Corky and all the players!

It was one of the coldest nights this winter, but nothing stopped the ANIMO heat that rocked the socks party at the Almeda residence in Ashburn!  The Cebu lechon and the great food spread concocted by the LSPAA members at a week’s notice, the booze, the games, the singing and the dancing at the Almeda basement, the non-stop picture-taking that started as early as 4 PM lasted into the night, capped by LSPAA President Gregg’s lechong-paksiw snacks in the wee hours of the morning!

The Green Tee Tent was buzzing with excitement even before the sun showed up.  All the 30 LSPAA volunteer members and friends came, some as easly as before 7 AM!   Coffee brews, bagels, pastries, bananas, strawberries and grapes heated up the cold Saturday morning; registration, give-aways, ticket sales, banners and ads set-up kept a steady hum occasionally spiked up with hellos and high 5s from friends who have not seen each other for quite some time; and golf carts came swishing by one after the other, in anticipation of the fun day that was yet to come!   It was more than a full 18-hole shotgun tee-off at 9 AM despite the cold blustery winds!  All the expected 78 players came, some as early as 7:30 AM!

2016-08-03 LSPAA Visited the Greenbrier Kids
The Greenbrier Kids in West VA
Recall our Greenbrier Kids – the 7 students from the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde who are on internship at the Greenbrier Resorts in White Sulphur Springs in West Virginia.  They lost everything, including their passports, when the floods of June 23rd swept away the house that they were living in and left with nothing except the clothes that they were wearing.  LSPAA’s Leony Gimeno, Aurora Arellano and Elmer Rosario, together with the Philippine Embassy Assistance-to-Nationals Officer Larry Sumando, visited these kids in West VA who shared their harrowing experiences during the height of the floods, how they managed to survive and how they helped their elderly neighbors climb up the mountain.  At very young ages, they got more than a practicum for their culinary course.  They underwent a real-life survival adventure, not only during the floods, but more so after when they needed to pick-up the pieces and tried to get back to normalcy, on their own, away from their families.  They thought they have escaped the floods in Manila and never expected this could happen to them here in the USA.

Bro. & Co. at Veramar Winery
Two thumbs up to Jeff Garcia, the team host for the day, for this beautiful winery facing the mountains. It was a perfect setting for the Filipino light baon at 3 PM. Jeff's shrimp cocktails and chicken macaroni, Norie's cheese pimiento sandwiches and pakwan and Girlie's fruits and cheeses on a breezy afternoon surely made the instant winery picnic a welcome mid-day respite!  What better way to cap a light lunch than a 7-bottle wine tasting?

LSPAA thanks all the generous donors on the fund raising for the funeral services and repatriation of Gladys’ remains to the Philippines. Cuisia’s term is ending on June 30, 2016 after 5 years of exemplary diplomatic service for the Filipinos in the USA.
BowlALU Reheat was a big hit! Bowl America-Edsall was at full capacity! The sponsoring alumni organizations, Ateneo, La Salle and University of the Philippines, all maxed out their team quota. One-hundred and sixty bowlers playing for the three schools, together with their families and friends filled the lanes with fun and excitement. The pep squad rally opener indeed perked up the mood to capture the championship trophies!  Congratulations to the UP Shooters for bagging the champion team trophy, to La Salle-Bowleros for the runner-up team trophy, to Marc Yalong from La Salle-Bowleros as the highest series male bowler and to Hieu Nguyen from UP Shooters as the highest series female bowler. The perfect-300 for a 9-pin no-tap format was persistently elusive that nobody succeeded in capturing the perfect-300 trophies.

Bowling Green 2 Champion
Bowling Green 2, led by Team Captain Leony Gimeno, bagged the championship trophy in the recently concluded World Bank Fall Bowling Tournament while Bowling Green 1 led by Team Captain Norie Benedicto bagged the 4th place.   It was an action-packed knock-down competition when both BG1 & BG2 won in round 1 with Hermie Gonzalez’ non-stop strikes and spares on top of her high handicap and Manny Santiago’s record-high 222.  Both teams faced-off in round 2 with a tie score at only one frame left to go between BG1’s Adjo Gonzalez and BG2’s Gogi Goduco.  Both made a strike-strike-9, that is how friendly the game was!  However, in the end, BG2 won by 10 points courtesy of Gogi’s spare in the 9th frame.  BG2 members were Juliette Barredo, Gogi Goduco, Elmer Rosario, Manny Santiago and Gregg Angeles.  BG1 members were Jovy Jereza, Hermie Gonzalez, Adjo Gonzalez, Marvin Opulencia and Bennie Benedicto.  The BGs sister team, Pintastics, bagged the season championship trophy (total highest points won for the season) with team members from LSPAA, Jenny Orbeta and Butch Cascarro together with Maiko Orbeta (Team Captain) and Mikee Orbeta.

2015-06-27 LSPAA Picnic & Elections
LSPAA Picnic & Elections
Mother nature played her tricks on the LSPAA summer picnic but that did not deter the group to transport Picnic Shelter A of Burke Lake Park to Springfield and keep the party going!  The turnout was more than was expected despite the very heavy rain!  Though grilling was a challenge, everyone still had fun from the first doorbell at exactly 12 noon up to the 7:00 PM mass at St. Raymond’s for those who lingered. The LSPAA election of officers, chaired by the Founding President Bing Crisologo, went fast and uncontested.  Congratulations to the newly-elected LSPAA 2015-2017 set of officers:  Leony Gimeno-Rosario, reelected for the second and final term as President;  Gregg Angeles, from Secretary to Vice President; Jeff Garcia as the new Secretary; Aurora “Girlie” Arellano,  into her 6th & 7th year as Treasurer; and Dan La O as the new PRO.  The board of officers will be assisted by Aileen Lozon-Subido as the new Sports Director and Ron Diokno, in his second term as the Communications Director.  The outgoing officers, Robin Gopiao, Tito Alisuag and Norie Benedicto joined the existing Board of Advisors.  Robin and Norie leave behind a very impressive 2-year performance, capped by a very successful La Salle-Ateneo 2014 sportsfest.  Tito, who has been skillfully preserving all LSPAA events through the lenses of his camera, committed to keep on documenting LSPAA’s glorious moments!  The next two years will be transition years for the next president who will be coming from Leony’s newly-elected board.  To the new set of officers – KEEP ON ENGAGING THAT ANIMO!!!

LSPAA is proud to receive its special citation award “for establishing a legacy of dynamic social change and service that spans 20 years, thus creating a milestone that is celebrated by its constituency and the Global Lasallian Community as a whole.”  Bente Berde, LSPAA’s 20th anniversary fund-raising celebration, has successfully generated funds to help build a classroom in Tacloban devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in coordination with Feed the Hungry and donate scholarship funds to DLSU-Dasmarinas for Bahay Pag-Asa and to the DLSAA Scholarship Endowment Fund (Archersnook October-November 2014 Issue).    The award was received by LSPAA President Leony Gimeno from the DLSAA Re-Elected President Derrick Yu during the 10th DLSAA World Congress held at Fontana Leisure Park Convention Center in Clark, Pampanga.

2015-02-08 An Afternoon with DLSU Chorale Alumni
At Cricket and Mela Almeda's in Ashburn
It was a fun and fruitful potluck afternoon get-together at the beautiful home of Cricket and Mela Almeda in Ashburn on a rare February 2015 weekend without snow!  Originally organized as a DVD viewing event of the DLSU Alumni Chorale concert held in DLSU-Manila in August 2014 and participated in by LSPAA members Mela Almeda, Henry Rogando and Jeff Garcia, the afternoon morphed into something bigger. It became a “seeding” afternoon for new initiatives and new aspirations.  Initial talks on the possible hosting of the DLSU Chorale Alumni in Washington DC by LSPAA were explored.  A new alliance of the next generation LSPAA leaders was forged. Indeed, it was a first step for another big journey for LSPAA!

2014-12-10 LSPAA Celebrates the Life of Niok Karaan
LSPAA Celebrates the Life of Niok Karaan
We have featured quite a number of board members since Archer’s Nook started 18 months ago.  But Niok left us even before we got to his turn!    To all those who were present during the celebration of his life after the funeral mass, you would have witnessed the many friends who almost filled up the St. Raymond’s Catholic Church on a Monday 11 AM mass.  You would have heard the many testimonies of friends whose lives Niok had touched in one way or another.

Niok was a former LSPAA VP and was an active member of the LSPAA board of advisors upon his demise.  Except for his recent absence due to illness, he was always present in all LSPAA meetings and activities. With his deep, booming voice that does not need a microphone, he was a favorite master of ceremonies in most LSPAA events. This picture link shows how deeply involved Niok was with LSPAA.

Pasko Berde 2013
December 7, 2013; Golden Hong Kong, Springfield Plaza, VA

The Green saved Christmas when 101 people came! There was no Pacquiao fight, no ballroom dancing and no parlor games.  It was purely a night of good company, good food and a good cause.  Lasallian members, families and friends came to celebrate the season of sharing and bonding together to generate funds for the super typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) survivors.  Our master of ceremonies, Niok Karaan, ably conducted the night's proceedings highlighted by the musical intermissions of the Centeno kids, the Haiyan raffle draws donated by LBC, Bistro 7107, Venus Nails and Lance Straps, the launch of the new LSPAA banner and the Bente Berde reveal, a taste of what is to come in 2014.

Bowling Green Teams
It was a day of pleasant surprises for the Bowling Green Teams!  BOWLING GREEN 1 (Robin Gopiao, Norie & Bennie Benedicto, Manny Santiago, Mark Medina, Rose Marquez and Gary Gavino) beat the unbeatable season first placer IT BOWLAGA (Sisons, Alapides and Bandongs) in round 1 of the Top Eight 3-game knockout championship day.  BOWLING GREEN 2 (Adjo & Hermie Gonzalez, Gogi Goduco, Aida Franco, Paolo Gimeno, Elmer and Leony Rosario) also beat the other unbeatable Salvio Family team, the PINTACIOS, in round 1.  Both BGs lost in round 2 against Noy Pins and Turkey Hunters so it turned out to be a friendly match for 3rd place in round 3.  It was so friendly that both BGs are tied up with only Adjo left to throw a ball and needing only 1 pin to win the game.  BG2 took home the 3rd place trophy and BG1 took home the 4th place glory.

La Salle picnics are always fun. But who would have thought that Ateneans can be fun to be with too! Maybe part of the reason was winning the last event of the sportsfest. The TUG-o-WAR! Almost 60 people attended the picnic to celebrate the completion of the first Ateneo La Salle DC Sportsfest. We look forward to bigger support and stronger teams next year!

Everyone is talking about doing this again. Thank you Johnny Roque for manning the scoreboard for La Salle. And thank you to those on the bleachers for helping me cheer our team. You see that blue padding on the wall under the ring? That was our drums. It was fun and happy but in the end we lost by a few points. It was still fun and happy because we have found new friends and members. We look forward to a better outcome next year.

Our chapter received a Special Citation Honor Chapter Award for our creative monthly activities that promoted a sense of fellowship, participation, camaraderie and a balance of fun, social responsibility and community awareness.
The Congress was a great mix of work, fun and creativity. The plenary session gave me a greater understanding of the One La Salle concept, history of La Salle and the Lasallian brothers. This was a very well-organized event.

2008-03-01 Forever Verde was a blast!
http://share.escrip.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8CZNnDFm3aMri
Yes, it was a blast. I hope everyone was just as excited too! I don’t remember drinking as much beer since we graduated .. I guess the key there is ‘remember’… Being there with your classmates is really the best! You see everybody with a big wide smile on their face. Suddenly you are young again. You were there. Life was easy! We saw old faces … some are hard to recall … some did not change … an a few still look really hot! The touchy feely part was when we went to the second floor of the engineering building. My engbatch (’83) is the last batch with mounted pictures on the wall. We each took a pose pointing to our own picture on the wall. This is something you would not want to miss. Next time you have a chance to visit, make sure you look for your picture! Congratulations to the planning committee and DLSAA-Manila for organizing a very successful homecoming. Entertainers for the evening included Cynthia Patag and Randy Santiago. Both from Batch ‘83. Also our member Ron Diokno was tapped to help by the planning committee!

2008-01-05 Sinigang Night – Launching of Operation Alkansiya
http://share.escrip.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8CZNnDFm3aMoM
When Bro. Gus spoke to us in 2007 to discuss the One La Salle Scholarship fund, we were inspired by the far reaching and long term impact of the program. But we were faced with rising cost of fundraising events and the inherent lack of efficiency. Too much money was being spent on venue and services. Also after a very busy 2007, folks were not so interested in another major fund raising event. Economically, lots of members are not able to afford to participate in events that ‘costs’ hard earned money. During our 2007 ‘Tinola Night’, Operation Alkansiya was proposed and approved. It is a good way for almost 100% of money collected, make its way to One La Salle. We also created an ‘installment’ giving process that allowed members to contribute a small amount on a monthly basis and still make a big tax deductible impact at the end of the year.

2007-12-02 Christmas Party
http://share.escrip.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8CZNnDFm3aMd2
One of the problems we had in our chapter was the lack of new members. We used the invite to our ‘Free’ Christmas Party to spread the word. We received new members and also invited other friends. This event changed how we measure the success of our activities. We started measuring success by the number of new alumni we would meet.

2007-11-10 Tinola Night

We were fortunate to have Br. Gus break bread with us at the residence of alumni member Max Jalandoni with help of his wife Nadine. He gave us an in depth profile of Bahay Pagasa and the One La Salle scholarship program. My best take away from the meeting was his reassuring words that the brothers are constantly praying for the health and well being of each and every La Salle Alumni! Animo La Salle!

Shortly after our gala, we were off to Toronto! Members of our chapter attended and I was able to share our goals during the plenary session. As a Christian school we want to foster camaraderie and friendship among our members, through our three main thrusts, Faith, Health and Wealth were well received. We want activities that glorify the name of God through prayer groups, active participation and organization of the monthly Filipino Mass and retreats. We also want to ensure that our membership is conscious of their health through Health Awareness Seminars and through the formation of our Biker and Hikers club. And finally wealth opportunities were always on our mind. We would like to encourage business ownership to be explored by our members who mostly have a salary based income.
